I built this RDF Transmitter for a radio related Venture Crew I was a member of (the crew no longer exists). A 2-meter HT is used as the transmitter, with PicCon (www.byonics.com) controller. It is remotely programmable on/off and timing over the air while in operation. A 12-volt 4-ampere-hour gel cell battery powers everything for extensive periods. The project is contained in an ammo because they are shielded, waterproof, and durable. I added an eye-bolt on left side for padlock and bicycle chain connection. I also added a label to one side of the box that identifies the unit as an Amateur Radio transmitter if found by concerned individuals or law enforcement personnel.
The tape measure beam is an easy to assemble project that can be done in a limited amout of time. I was able to get some 1 inch wide (standard) tape measures from the local home improvement center on sale for $1.99 a piece making the project inexpencive also. A single 25 ft tape measure can make approx 2.5 antennas. The plans for this antenna can be found at: http://home.att.net/~jleggio/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm.

Beam with elements rolled-up for storage.

Beam with elements open for use.
